Q: I am currently a graduate student, but I wrote a great paper while I was doing my undergraduate degree. Is the paper eligible for submission?

A: Unfortunately, your paper is not eligible for submission. In order to ensure that all papers reflect undergraduate research efforts and that publication opportunities are given primarily to undergraduate students, we are only accepting papers from 2008 and 2009 alumni who are currently not enrolled in graduate school.

Q: According to your guidelines, I can only submit a paper that has been marked for a course. Do I send you the marked copy, then?

A: No, please do not submit the copy marked by your instructor. We ask that the paper be marked so that you are aware of how your paper was received. Our hope is that, with your instructor’s feedback, you are able to make adjustments to your paper prior to submitting it to the journal.

Q: Am I allowed to revise or edit my marked paper before I submit it?

A: Absolutely. In fact, we encourage you to carefully look over the feedback you’ve received from your instructor (see the answer to the question above). Such a step is obviously not mandatory, but ameliorating the quality of your paper can potentially enhance your chances of being published.

Q: May I submit more than one paper?

A: Yes, you certainly may. However, only one of your papers may be selected for publication.

Q: I wrote a paper for an English course wherein I made use of visual imagery, specifically drawing and engraving, along with poetry. Is it eligible for submission?

A: Absolutely. We invite students from all departments within the Faculty of Arts (UBC) to submit papers, provided that these are grounded in or make use of visual sources. The latter is a category that encompasses a variety of media and a range of imagery from visual culture to architecture and the built environment. Our only expectation is that the source material be dealt with in a critical and scholarly manner.

Q: I’ve just submitted my paper. When should I expect to hear back from you with an answer?

A: After the deadline for submissions (January 15, 2010), our Editorial Board will be reading and reviewing all papers, and we should be able to give you a definitive answer within the second or third week of February 2010.

Q: If my paper is chosen for publication, what kind of work is required of me?

A: All authors whose papers have been selected for publication are expected to work with the editor they will have been assigned to, in order to make further improvements to their paper. Additionally, authors will also be encouraged to seek out the help of faculty members throughout the editing process. We ask that the authors please keep in mind that the majority of the work will be done over e-mail. Consequently, timely and efficient communication is expected.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of authors submitting papers in formats other than Chicago (MLA, APA) to reformat their works in the Chicago style.

Q: Will there be a print edition this year?

A: With this being our first year, we have chosen to publish online only at this point. As a means of ensuring a long-term online presence, we will be archiving each issue of the journal. Furthermore, this website has a stable URL should readers wish to consult a past issue.
